Citations 101: The Backbone of Local SEO for Contractors

If you've ever hired an SEO agency, you've heard the word "Citations." But what are they, and why do they determine whether you rank #1 or #10 in Google Maps?

What is a Citation?

A citation is simply any mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on another website. It doesn't even need a link back to your site to count.

Think of it as a "digital vote of confidence."

Why Google Cares

Google's #1 fear is sending a user to a fake or closed business.

If it sees that "Mike's Plumbing" is listed at 123 Main St on Google, Yelp, YellowPages, Angi, and the Chamber of Commerce, it has high confidence that you are real and operational.

The "Consistency" Trap

The most common mistake contractors make is having inconsistent data across the web.

  • Website says: "Mike's Plumbing Inc." at "123 Main St"

Don't pay for those "1,000 Directory Submission" packages. Most are spam. Focus on the top 20-30 high-quality directories:

  4. Apple Maps (Critical for iPhone users)
  5. Facebook Business Page
  6. Angi (HomeAdvisor)

Don't Forget Niche Directories: Sites like The Blue Book (for construction) or Houzz carry extra weight because they are industry-specific.

Data Aggregators: The Source of Truth

There are three main "Data Aggregators" (Data Axle, Localsearch, Foursquare) that feed data to hundreds of smaller directories. If you fix your data at the aggregator level, it trickles down to the rest of the web. This is the most efficient way to fix a NAP mess.
